Single-Family Homes in Sonora

Vernacular Architecture on the Sea of Cortez

ABAA's Design Response to the Sonoran Desert
The development of these single-family homes is situated in an enclave of extreme contrasts: the Islas del Mar urbanization, near Puerto Peñasco (often known as Rocky Point). Here, the desert meets the Gulf of California. The site boasts a unique location between the mainland and a coastal lagoon, on terrain characterized by scarce vegetation and the imposing presence of endemic cacti reaching up to 50 feet (15 meters) in height.

Although the setting is remote and natural, it maintains vital connections, being located 214 miles from Phoenix, Arizona, and 183 miles from Mexicali. The challenge for ABAA Barcelona Architecture was to integrate this luxury development into a low-density environment, respecting both the sightlines and the local culture.

Concept and Bioclimatic Strategy
Our design for Sonora is based on a profound understanding of the location through two inseparable lenses: the local culture and the extreme climate conditions. The result is a contemporary vernacular architecture that prioritizes habitability and sustainability in the desert environment.

The key strategy involves grouping compact volumes that act as protection against the sun and wind. These modules are organically connected by a perimeter corridor that defines and embraces the interior courtyard (patio). This central element is not merely aesthetic; it is the true bioclimatic heart of the home, essential for generating shade, regulating temperature, and ensuring privacy amidst the vastness of the landscape.
