Caparica (Portugal)
A lighthouse on the Tagus
We are in Porto Brandao, in the municipality of Caparica, Portugal. This is where the idea for this project was born, which consists of the rehabilitation of a disused industrial building. The enclave has an interesting and strategic location for the connection with Belem (Lisbon) by river, as it is on the edge of the Tagus River, and by road, as it is a point of connection to different environments of ecological value and of cultural, tourist and social interest.
The project is framed in a context of political will to renew the sector in order to make it more dynamic and sustainable, reconsidering the existing uses and renewing its architectural heritage.
Thus, the intervention on this building is based on three concepts: the optimisation of the building, making the most of its performance, the flexibility of the interior spaces related to the environment, and the energy sustainability of the building.
In addition to the refurbishment of the existing building, the construction of an annex building with a large green roof that visually connects the mountain and the sea is planned. The new building is camouflaged with the mountain so as not to detract from the prominence of the existing building and so that the historical memory of the complex prevails in the intervention.
The result of the project is a building nestled at the end of the Tagus, on the front line facing Lisbon: a new landmark that aims to be visible from afar like a lighthouse on the Tagus.
